1. Beyond the RDA: The Science of Muscle Protein Synthesis

The standard Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of 0.8 g/kg/day was established by the National Academies to prevent overt clinical protein deficiency and negative nitrogen balance in sedentary adults. However, clinical meta-analyses (Morton et al., 2018) demonstrate that maximizing muscle hypertrophy and strength adaptations during resistance training requires an intake of 1.62 g/kg/day (approx 0.73 g/lb/day). Higher intakes (up to 2.2 g/kg) provide substantial preservation of lean tissue during hypocaloric dieting.

2. The Leucine Trigger & Bolus Distribution

Muscle protein synthesis is non-linearly regulated by an essential amino acid "leucine trigger" (~2.7–3.0 grams of leucine per feeding, equivalent to ~25–40 grams of intact high-biological-value protein). Spreading daily intake across 3 to 5 distinct feedings spaced 3 to 5 hours apart yields superior fractional synthetic rates compared to consuming the bulk of daily protein in a single evening meal.
