Human nocturnal sleep is not a uniform state of unconsciousness. Instead, the central nervous system cycles through distinct neurochemical phases every 90 to 110 minutes, orchestrated by reciprocal interaction between the brainstem, thalamus, and hypothalamus:
N1: Somnolence / Light Sleep
4%–5% of cycle. Transition from wakefulness alpha waves (8–12 Hz) to low-amplitude theta waves (4–7 Hz). Easy to awaken without grogginess.
N2: Stable Intermediate Sleep
45%–55% of total sleep. Characterized by sleep spindles (11–16 Hz bursts generated by the reticular thalamus) and K-complexes which shield cortical processing from sensory stimuli.
N3: Slow-Wave Sleep (Deep)

Why Waking Mid-Cycle Causes "Sleep Inertia"
If your alarm sounds while your brain is in the depths of Stage N3 Slow-Wave Sleep, the brain's prefrontal cortex remains bathed in high concentrations of extracellular adenosine. This neurological state—termed sleep inertia—manifests as severe disorientation, diminished sensory acuity, slowed motor reaction time, and subjective cognitive fog that can persist for 30 to 120 minutes following awakening.
By timing your sleep duration to complete whole multiples of 90 minutes (plus standard latency), you arrange to wake during the termination of REM or the beginning of Stage N1 light sleep, when cortical activity closely mirrors wakefulness.
